Should a student be considered a “customer”?

A customer is someone who pays for good and services. A student in this sense can be considered as one. However, it is not absolutely right to consider a student as a typical custommer. First of all, not all students pay for their own education requirements or tuition. Though the student is receiving the service (education) someone else is spending for it, or rather investing in this respect. Secondly, the theories and practices of market gamemanship (I also took an economics class this semester), could hurt the quality and depth of eduation provided if the student is considered a customer in the strict economic sense of the word.
